Music Classes

Learn to play a musical instrument, or expand your current musical skills in our fun classes. We offer guitar classes, along with other instruments such as harp, dulcimer and piano. All skill levels are welcome. You can also work on your voice skills by joining our singing and choir classes in both jazz and traditional styles. This is a course for the beginning guitarist. Its objective is to get the students playing quickly, by emphasizing chords and right‐hand strumming and figure picking patterns. The basic fundamentals of music, including note reading, rhythm, and harmonic structure will also be covered. Careful attention is given to proper playing technique. The students must bring a playable acoustic guitar to every class meeting. NOTE: A materials fee of $20 is payable to the instructor at first class meeting to cover text and teaching materials.

The University Chorus is a large mixed choir boasting a near 100‐year history. All interested participants may self‐select into this ensemble (no audition required). The Chorus is comprised of Albuquerque‐area community members as well as UNM students, faculty and staff. Each semester the choir focuses on masterworks of the choral‐orchestral repertoire and regularly collaborates with the UNM Symphony Orchestra and other area instrumental groups. Weekly rehearsals focus on fundamentals of singing technique, musicianship and choral ensemble participation. All ability levels are welcome.

This course explores the art, challenges and the fun of improvising jazz on the guitar. It includes learning tunes and related scales, arpeggios, chord forms and comping. Students will also study phrasing examples which express the language of jazz as well as techniques to facilitate these ideas and ear training. For hands on experience, a portion of class time will be spent on jamming on the material learned in class. Questions in class are encouraged. Please bring an 'acoustic' guitar, a pad and pencil. The instructor, a professional musician, has developed a unique teaching method designed for those who can't carry a tune or have other singing difficulties. You must attend all four classes. This class will explore the basic elements of singing a song; tempo, groove, style, form and arrangement. We'll work on strengthening the voice and polishing your performance. We will choose songs from the jazz standard repertoire and be accompanied by a professional musician in our recital. This instrument is widely used in the American old‐time music tradition. Its origins are traced back to the early 1800's from the Scots‐Irish in the southern Appalachian Mountains. In this class you will learn to play tunes in the DAD tuning. While some music theory will be covered, you don't need any previous musical experience to be successful. Loaner instruments are available during class time. Materials for the class range from compositions of traditional well‐known Latin Jazz artists to lesser known contemporary composers and musicians. The class will be centered on the rhythm guitar an its role in Rock and Roll, folk, Country and Pop genres. We will be building on the Chord vocabulary learned from the previous class and there will be some note reading, but the class will mostly focus on learning the strum patterns and chords for any song that would be available from multiple sources such as from Songbooks, Lead Sheets, online tabs and chords. The class will be using the Hal Leonard Guitar Method I book, but students are encouraged to learn their favorite songs. All types of guitars and genres are accepted in this class. Taking Guitar: Beginning is not required, but knowledge of chords (at least in the keys of C and G) and some note reading skills are required. Students without basic theory fundamentals or the ability to read music notation must be open to initially catching up/learning those basics taught in Guitar: Beginning, as those skills wiill be utilized in Guitar: Beginning II. NOTE: A materials fee of $20 is payable to the instructor at the beginning of the first class session.

The bowed psaltery is one of the easiest instruments to start playing and has an ethereal, otherworldly sound due to unique inharmonic overtones. It is triangular in shape and played with a simple bow. Using familiar songs that many students will already know, this class will cover note layout, bowing method, and tips on how to draw the innate beauty out of the instrument. Loaners will be available during class sessions at no charge. Come and be captivated by this wonderful instrument! In this class, you will enjoy learning to play songs of various styles. Previous musical experience is not required as basic music theory will be covered. It is not necessary to own a harp. You will have an opportunity to play a number of harps to experience the difference in size and tone.
