Outdoor Recreation Classes

Get outside and free yourself from your routine! Whether you enjoy hiking, kayaking, improving your golf game, or taking on a new challenge, we offer activities for all skill levels. Everyone can find something they enjoy.

Our instructors specialize in their sport and will work with you on how to train and avoid injury. Get right to the fun by learning the ropes under friendly, expert guidance. Our Outdoor Recreation classes will get you moving and having fun in no time.

Build confidence on the mountain bike! Students will practice and progress on obstacles and skill courses. Students will also learn basic items to carry with them on a trail ride and basic bike set‐up. Learn the fundamental mountain bike skills needed to become a better rider. ·Essential bike positions to ride various trail conditions ·Bike/body separation skills ·Braking/speed control ·Slow and fast speed steering/cornering skills ·How to maneuver up and down obstacles ·Proper gear selection for the trail conditions NOTE: Please make sure you have snacks, water, sunscreen, helmet, and a safe‐working bike. NO helmet, NO ride! Please arrive a few minutes early for a bike safety check. If your bike is found unsafe to ride during the bike safety check, you will have to attend another class when your bike is ready. Bring whatever seat bag, hydration pack, repair kit, tools, and spare tube you have and would normally carry on a ride. Wear appropriate clothing for cycling and the weather that day.

Go beyond the basic stroke development. We will review ground strokes and then proceed to develop shots such as the lob, volley, overhead, serves, and return of serves. It is important to learn and practice these strokes, so the course will also include match play. NOTE: Bring two cans of NEW tennis balls, racquet, tennis shoes, and a container of water.

Learn to execute the forehand, backhand, serve, volley, overhead and lob. Sound techniques of these shots will be emphasized. Time will be devoted to players having a great understanding of tennis rules and method of scoring. Match play will also be instituted to develop these skills in a real setting. Students need to bring two cans of pressurized new balls. Players need to bring their own racquets and comfortable tennis shoes. NOTE: Students bring two cans of new pressurized tennis balls, and your own racquet.

Are you unable to finish your round of golf striking the ball as well as you started? If you answered yes to any of these questions this is the class for you. The 5 week class will include a Titleist Performance Institute full body assessment, an exercise strategy based on those results and drills to increase your club head speed to hit the ball longer.

Experience the thrill and adventure of vertical rock climbing. Learn climbing techniques and the safe use of equipment through top roping. Gain the necessary basic skills to safely continue the journey into the world of vertical rock climbing. The course will be conducted at UNM's climbing walls and in the field. All equipment will be provided (details will be given at the first class meeting.) Note: Field trips will be on two Saturdays, concurrent with the class schedule. Students need to bring one piece of 8 ft. long, 9‐11 mm (3/8‐7/8'') thick accessory rope.

Join New Mexico Kayak Instruction as we paddle down the Rio Grande during this world‐renowned event. Imagine yourself among hundreds of balloons; some near, some far, some overhead, some just a few feet away doing a Splash 'n Dash. We will meet at a designated location, based on best wind and water conditions, then board NMKI's passenger vans and shuttle to the launch site. Participants should wear clothes and shoes that can get wet and muddy, including layers of non‐cotton clothing and a windbreaker. Please note that a 10mph wind will prevent balloons from flying, but have no effect on paddlecraft. Historically, we witness balloons directly overhead and in all directions about 90% of the time, a ''Splash n' Dash'' about 50% of the time and about 10% of the time, balloon fly away from the river or don't fly at all. The tour will continue regardless of whether the balloons fly. NOTE: Participants must register by September 30, 2019 and will receive an email ~24 hours before the event with directions.

This Bicycle Mechanics Course is designed to teach basic skills for the novice and advanced cyclists that wants to learn some basic bicycle care. This is a great class to help you become more self‐sufficient with your bike. Students will learn to properly clean the bike, clean and lube the chain, learn to make minor adjustments, and to change, repair and make tire thorn resistant. NOTE: This course is the first part of a certificate course #10653. A materials fee of $15 is payable to the instructor at the first class. Basic tools, lubes, cleaners, etc. and several work stands are provided. However, if you wish to practice with your own tools, you may bring them.
