Beginner Series

The Beginner Series classes are very short and affordable introductory classes in Digital Arts topics. This series is designed for those who are interested in Digital Arts, but may be short on time or budget. The Beginner Series classes may be applied to a certificate program with the approval of the program supervisor. If you decide to pursue a certificate or further your Digital Arts training.

Create a free website on WordPress.com. Choose a title for your website and learn how to manage the settings to control your website. Select a theme, add content and work with images. Learn how to use plugins and widgets. If you decide to upgrade to a self‐hosted WordPress website, all the information from this class will apply. Prerequisite: 58011.

Learn the basics of photography as you explore the capabilities of your digital camera. Discover what aperture, shutter speed and ISO are and how they affect your photographs. Find out how and when to use flash, and experiment with photographic composition to get the most out of your camera--and yourself! Recommended for those new to photography as well as film photographers who want to make the switch to digital. Note: Bring your camera, manual and extra batteries to class. Prerequisite: None. Improve your photos with simple photo-editing techniques used by amateurs and professionals alike. Learn to rotate, crop, and enhance your digital photos for sharing and presentation. Discover the distinctions between different popular photo-editing programs and discuss various file formats, such as JPG, TIFF and camera RAW to determine which programs and formats best suit your work and support best practices. Prerequisite: Basic computer experience.

One definition for photographic composition is simple: the pleasing selection and arrangement of subjects within the picture area. In general, good pictures result from careful attention to some basic elements of composition together with appropriate lighting and an interesting subject. Become familiar with the practical applications of the key elements of composition to improve your photography: point of interest, simplicity, contrast, balance, framing, viewpoint, movement, diagonals and rule of thirds. Prerequisite: None.
