About the Web Design & Development Curriculum

Our Web Design certificate program offers curriculum in graphic design and web design theory and related software. To get started with creating and maintaining websites, we recommend starting with these three classes, in any order: 58101 Creating and Maintaining a Website, 58111 HTML and CSS: Beginning, and 58121 Dreamweaver: Beginning. These three classes create a foundation in creating and administering websites, coding and web editing.

Trends in web design tend to be diverse. In addition to the above skills, some employers also require an understanding of Content Management Systems (CMS). For this reason, we also recommend taking 58221 Content Management Systems early in your curriculum. From here, you can move on to more specific CMSes as needed, such as WordPress or Drupal.

Basic design principles are covered in course 55101 Graphic Design and Visual Communication. This class provides the foundation for all other Graphic Design courses, including web design theory. Basic understanding of computer graphics software, including an overview of raster and vector graphics, is covered in 56101 Computer Graphics: An Introduction. This class is a prerequisite to all other computer graphics courses. We recommend taking these two classes early in your curriculum as well.
