96230 - Fundamentals of Film Production
Course Overview
The course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of film production and cover best practices and principles. Over a period of ten weeks, we will follow the mock-production of a narrative feature film, investigating each stage: development, pre-production, principal photography, post-production, and distribution. We will establish the foundations of the process by understanding its parts; we will familiarize ourselves with the roles of key talent and crew members, and review how their individual tasks are entwined; finally, we will have the opportunity to learn from film industry veterans, in New Mexico and beyond.
What You'll Learn
The main objective of this introductory course is to familiarize students with the essential tenets of film production and management. They will learn how to manage the professional silos that exist and cohabit within the film production process.
The course will cover:
· Managerial, financial, technical, organizational, legal, and creative aspects of film production and explain how they all work in concert to achieve the desired goal—a finished film on the screen.
· Workflows and tasks of specific crew members: from the production manager and the assistant director, to the script supervisor and the cinematographer, to the editor and the mixer.
· Creating the critical elements at each stage of the production process: a pitch-deck, a shooting schedule, a budget, and a distribution plan for the project we will mock-produce.
You will leave this course with a solid understanding of filmmaking process and be able to choose a specific area of interest with clarity and knowledge, should you wish to continue on that path.
