Health and Fitness classes at UNM Continuing Education help you open the door to better health. Our well-trained instructors have experience working with people of all ages and physical ability. We offer classes in a variety of exercise and fitness topics including, yoga, dance, swimming, weight lifting, and more. Whether you are looking to drop pounds, or work on strength training, we offer classes that will fit your needs. Like all of our classes, the schedules are convenient and the classes are affordable; and you can try something new without a long-term contract.

The Nia Technique is a blend of martial arts, dance, and body integration therapies and is adaptable to any fitness level. Done in bare feet, our dance relaxes the body and increases strength, stamina, and flexibility. RelaXercise is a class that improves total fitness through progressive stretching and strengthening exercises along with full‐body breathing techniques. Each class ends in a relaxation period that allows the body to de‐stress and process what it has experienced. These movements are designed to increase stability and strength around the joints and increase flexibility and range of motion throughout the body while decreasing stress. Learn to use your natural breathing patterns to facilitate movement without pain and extra effort. Positive outcomes include total body conditioning, improved balance and mobility, body mind integration and injury prevention. Students can work at their own pace. Restorative yoga cultivates a state of deep relaxation by combining restful yoga poses with attention to the breath. Restorative yoga also features a slower pace, a less complex sequence of poses, and a variety of props (provided by the studio) in order to spend more time in each pose with less muscular exertion. Meditative breathwork will contribute to the goal of slowing down and finding stillness. Benefits can include stress reduction, improved range of motion and alignment, and better body awareness.

Join us for an exciting trip to Troncones, a tranquil and beautiful beach with the warm clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. Troncones is located 20 miles from the fabulous sleepy fishing village of Zihuatanejo. We will be staying at Hacienda Eden (www.edenmex.com), a beach hacienda with tastefully decorated oceanfront rooms, each with a private bath. Delicious seafood and vegetarian entrees will be served by a gourmet professional chef. Two yoga classes will be offered each day for all levels and will include asana (yoga poses), pranayama (breathwork), meditation, Nada Yoga (Yoga of Sound) and Yoga Nidra (Deep Relaxation). There will be ample opportunities for rest and quiet time, or to partake in many activities such as swimming and bird watching. Also, eco‐tours with special hikes to caves, a swimming hole, and a kayaking adventure on a nearby lagoon are available. Horseback riding, massage, shopping trips to Ziwa, snorkeling at the beautiful Ixtapa Island, and deep sea fishing are other optional activities.

This course teaches the First Section of the traditional Yang Family Style 108 movement Long Form of T'ai Chi Ch'uan: the most widely practiced form of T'ai Chi in the world. Special emphasis is placed on methods of improving balance skills, identification and release of areas of body tension, and eliminating habits which can cause stress to the knee and lower back. Documented health benefits of regular Form practice include stress reduction, enhanced body awareness and improved lower body strength. Virginia Huettig began her study of T'ai Chi in 1996. She has taught T'ai Chi Ch'uan at UNM since 2002.

This course continues the study of the traditional Yang Style Long Form, building on the knowledge and skills gained in the Beginner's class. Students receive detailed instruction and practice before progressing to study of the second section of the form. There will also be special focus on the walking movements that include Repulse Monkey (backward stepping), Wave Hands Like clouds (sideways stepping) and an introduction to kicking techniques. Emphasis will be placed on attaining the quality of groundedness, through improvement of balance skills and further deepening one's state of relaxation. Students will learn and experiment with new methods aimed at removing stress‐related blockages, thus enhancing the health benefits of their T'ai Chi practice. Virginia Huettig began her study of T'ai Chi in 1996. She has taught T'ai Chi Ch'uan at UNM since 2002.

Since antiquity happiness and wellbeing have been the core pursuits of humanity. There is convincing scientific research evidence to show that this state of mind can be facilitated by using exercises in the area of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing. Specifically, if practiced in a group setting with feedback and support of other group members, the feeling of wellbeing is shown to be substantially increased. The present workshop proposes to discuss and facilitate specific techniques and help the participants find strategies or activities which will suit them and practical ways to implement these strategies in their daily lives to enhance their happiness and positivity.
