Language Classes

Planning a trip? Learn to speak and understand languages from around the world! UNM Continuing Education features a robust language program with classes taught by native speakers. From Spanish to Arabic, we help you get started on the journey of language learning. We have advanced courses in many languages so that you may continue to enhance and practice your new language skills. Learn a new language, for business, social or cultural purposes.

Language classes fill quickly, so register early. Refund requests must be made in writing to ceregistration@unm.edu three days prior to the start of class. Ahlan wa Sahlan! Welcome! This course introduces you to the fifth‐most spoken language in the world, one holding great significance to almost 2 billion Muslims worldwide. Considered a critical world language by agencies of the U.S. government, Arabic provides a key to understanding ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, and it connects us to 4 million Arab‐Americans, including Albuquerque's thriving refugee and university‐related populations. The course will focus on key conversational scenarios while introducing the alphabet and cultural considerations. At the end of the course, students will be able to communicate their basic needs in the Arab World. The instructor has worked for more than six years in the Middle East and has taught Arabic locally for more than eight years. Continue to enhance your Italian language skills. Learn the basics to start conversing on everyday subjects in present tense. We will use various methods such as games, role playing, and others to guide you through your language learning. This class is for students who followed through level Italian Beginning I (or with some practice and knowledge of Present Tense). Required Text: New Italian Espresso: Italian Course for English Speakers‐ Beginner and Pre‐intermediate by Paolo Bultrini and Filippo Graziani, Edition 2014 (ISBN 978‐88‐6182‐354‐9).

If you're familiar with basic Russian and want to move to the next level, this class is for you. You'll expand your knowledge of Russian vocabulary and grammar and improve your speaking skills. In addition to the textbook, you'll work with authentic written and audio materials including Russian printed media and TV clips, as well as excerpts from Russian movies. Note: Required text is Nachalo Vol. 1, textbook. Additional workbook is not required.
