Optimal Well-Being and Eastern Practice Classes

Having a life well lived is essential for everyone to thrive. It is more than surviving. According the CDC, “In simple terms, well-being can be described as judging life positively and feeling good.” This generally includes global judgments of life satisfaction and positive emotional responses, such as happiness, awe and joy. A few keys to well-being are social connection, compassion for ourselves and others, mindfulness and kindness. Eastern practices courses are time-honored traditions of wellness from non-Western cultures. Courses in this area are designed for a meaningful impact on well-being. These courses may be repeated semester to semester or to discover a new wellness strategy.

What are habits? Habits are behaviors that become automatic because they have been performed frequently in the past. This repetition or automaticity creates a mental association between the situation (cue) and action (behavior) and very soon we find ourselves at the mercy of these patterns. With mindfulness practices we can learn how to bring habitual behaviors and thought patterns into awareness and see them with greater clarity and wisdom. We can pause before reacting and choose the appropriate response for the moment we are in. Take home powerful tools to train your mind, implement a new rewarding pattern and create a compassionate action plan.

Find support for a simple, accessible practice of mindfulness meditation. Research in neuroscience tells us that a consistent meditation practice actually rewires the brain. Harvard researchers, using MRI scans, have shown that meditation can increase our "gray matter, " which may lead to better cognitive and psychological functioning. Meditation practice may help you to lower your daily stress, increase your focus, improve your sleep or reconnect with your life. Using mindfulness meditation methods based on the work of Jon Kabat‐Zinn in his Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts, join a supportive practice group for those seeking to increase their well‐being by sharing an hour each week in working towards a lifetime habit of mindfulness. Prerequisite: Mindfulness‐Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) 8‐week course or equivalent experience. Previous experience with mindfulness meditation is required.

Discover drug‐free methods for treating or preventing depression and enhancing well‐being. Depression seems to be a part of modern life, manifested as severely as clinical depression or as simply as feeling chronically tired or dissatisfied with life. But studies show that depression is nearly non‐existent among modern‐day hunter‐gatherers despite their difficult lives and lack of modern resources. Based on the work of clinical psychologist Stephen Ilardi, learn how simple lifestyle changes that most anyone can do may make a world of difference in how you feel and help you get back on track. Note: This course is not a substitute for medical treatment. Please seek medical advice if you suffer from a serious depressive condition.
