This course will show that the western religions also contain a rich and unappreciated tradition of devotion and prayer of Mysticism. This course will cover the major trends and schools in prayer and the devotional life within Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Beginning with a background of what is mysticism and its relation to various religious traditions, we will then examine Judaism (the Kabbalah); Christian mysiticism with its great diversity of devotees (such as Francis of Assisi, John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila and Julian of Norwich). The Islamic tradition known as Sufis with their many schools such as Rumi and the Whirling Dervishes and others as well will be covered.
