Class Name

This class will explore what it takes to go from initial thought to the finished poetic page. Each student will be shown how to recognize the poetry of their own life and how to translate that into a finished piece. Tim has published "Frame of Mind," a poetry book about his lifelong learning process. He writes about life and love. Tim has created many chapbooks*, the first of which was done on a typewriter (it was the 1980s!) Each student will receive a chapbook from the personal material produced in this class. A frequent reader at "Fixed and Free," a monthly reading venue, Tim and has been published in each of its poetry anthologies. *A chapbook is a small paperback booklet, typically containing poetry or short stories. NOTE: A materials fee of $5 will be payable to the instructor at the first session.

This course is designed to help students refine their writing skills for magazine and website‐based articles. We will follow the premise that good magazine writers are storytellers as much as they are purveyors of facts. The course will explore creative writing techniques unique to magazine nonfiction and will focus on writing, editing, and research skills in preparation for submitting articles for publication to a magazine. In addition to the classic magazine feature, this class will also address the genres of profiles, reviews, commentaries, how?tos, and destination/travel pieces. We will also look at the process of submitting article for publication.

Do you dream of writing a poem, play, memoir, short story, or novel, but can't seem to start? Or maybe you start, but bog down before you finish. This class is for anyone who wants to dissolve the blocks that prevent you from being the creative person you were meant to be. We will use the steps outlined in The Artist's Way to explore the principle that the natural order of life is creativity. Your work does not have to be shared in class. No writing experience is necessary, only the willingness to explore, and an open mind. Taught by Carol March, editor, writing coach, and fiction and nonfiction writer. Required text: The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. Available new and used at Amazon and abebooks.com
