Youth Summer Camps & Classes at UNM Continuing Education

Summer is here, and we have over 150 camps and classes for you to choose from this year!

We are looking forward to welcoming back old friends and greeting new ones! Each of our youth programs here at Continuing Education are designed to find that perfect balance of fun and learning to make for a memorable summer experience. Children ages 5-17 will explore,build,exercise their minds and bodies,tap into their creativity,and dream about their futures through engaging,hands-on,and nurturing programming. With the addition of many new technology camps this year,young coders and digital artists will be creating the apps and websites of the future.

Our staff and instructors are here for you,to help craft the perfect summer camp schedule,to share in your joys and to respond to any needs your family may have. Students will become familiar with fashion basics through a green and innovative perspective. From the basics of design, sketching, and hands-on techniques for working with recycled materials, students will make a garment and debut it in a ''fashion show'' for family and friends. Painting with still life is designed to give formal drawing and painting instruction that explores the foundations and fundamentals of watercolor. Students will be drawing from 3D objects, pictures of landscapes and self-portraits. Students will increase their knowledge of the effects of light on form, volume and line. This is a great class to begin studies in art or to improve drawing skills and understanding color and color mixing. Note: Students must bring a 4?x6? photo of themselves printed. A $25 supply fee is due to the instructor at the first class.

Every day, you are surrounded by graphic design: ads, posters, websites, signs, books and so much more. All of it is created by graphic designers. Graphic designers combine concepts, images and words to help people communicate with each other. In this class, you'll learn how to mix pictures, shapes, typography, color and (most importantly!) your ideas into powerful visuals that can inform, influence and even inspire people. Embark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset at home a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Students will work in pairs or teams and VR Games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. There is an additional $16 lab fee for the VR headset included in the tuition.

It includes an introduction to programming of RC (Radio Controlled) components and basic power tool use as teams use them to build a robot for the exciting camp competition. This camp will utilize the Engineering Design Process as campers work with teammates to come up with the best solution to real problems — then test and tweak their ideas. An overview of 3D Drawing techniques in DSS Solidworks will be included as well. In this cutting edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset at home a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. It includes an introduction to programming of RC (Radio Controlled) components and basic power tool use as teams use them to build a robot for the exciting camp competition. Try this new version of a Black Rocket classic! This class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay, and story telling. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Led by expert community leaders, participants will serve at local community-based organizations, learn from community members and their peers, engage in guided individual and group reflections on their service, and make a real difference! Lunch supervision will be provided to youth who are registered for a full day of camps. We ask that youth bring their own non-perishable lunch,with the exception of UNM Main Campus for PBS Kids Camp and Youth Sports Fitness Program,where lunch will be provided by the City of Albuquerque Food Program.
