Youth Summer Camps & Classes at UNM Continuing Education

The UNM Continuing Education Youth Program is a community dedicated to engaging children and adolescents in interesting and challenging classes and camps taught by expert instructors that encourage creativity, develop talents and skills, and support the overall health of each participant.

Classes for ages 5-17 are created specifically by age group so children’s development and interests are nurtured appropriately. We offer teen classes that include job skill training and career exploration opportunities. Partnerships with UNM departments, local educational businesses, and other universities allow us to offer classes in a variety of state of the art settings in addition to our facilities at Continuing Education.

Robotics Engineering Experience (ages 12-17)

This camp will provide an exciting experience in robotics and engineering that includes diving deeper into 3D Drawing techniques in DSS Solidworks, an introduction to programming of RC (Radio Controlled) components, and basic power tool use as teams use them to build a robot for the exciting camp competition. This camp is designed for students with some building experience, ages 12-17. This camp will utilize the Engineering Design Process as campers work with teammates to come up with the best solution to real problems - then test and tweak their ideas. In addition to building a robot to complete the task, students will work in a team environment, write an engineering manual, and learn important lessons in marketing and project management. While no previous experience is necessary, students who have a desire to learn and challenge themselves will benefit most from this intensive experience. DSS Solidworks is an industry leader in computer aided, 3D Design software. During this robotics engineering experience, every student will be given opportunities to design robot parts using Solidworks and to learn from experienced Solidworks students. In addition to this priceless and unique experience, each student will leave with a one-year license for the student version of Solidworks so that they can continue learning after camp is over. This camp is presented by Dr. Shelly Gruenig and Be Greater Than Average LLC. This STEM peer learning experience emphasizes informal science education (free-choice learning), project-based (inquiry-based) learning, and systems thinking that is appropriate for all levels of experience.
